Garifuna Settlement Day 2020!

Posted: Thursday, November 19, 2020. 2:10 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Despite the restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Belizeans at home and abroad join with the Garinagu people today in the celebration of Garifuna Settlement Day, marking the arrival and settlement of this proud group of people to Belize’s shores in 1832.

This year’s theme for November celebrations is “Garinagu: úara, here; awansera asta lidan liderenouga.” (“Garinagu: United and Strong, moving forward despite challenges”) which the National Garifuna Council (NGC) believes is made even more relevant due to the pandemic.

While the limitations on social gatherings broke a 79-year tradition for conducting the reenactment of the first arrival, this year featured celebrations in a new virtual format, which included the annual battle of the drums and a tribute to Thomas Vincent (TV) Ramos, who championed celebrating the Garinagu people’s contributions to the development of Belize.

Breaking Belize News takes this opportunity to acknowledge the Garinagu people for their role in Belize’s development, and wish all of Belize a Happy Garifuna Settlement Day.
