Maya people show love to the Garinagu on Garifuna Settlement Day

By BBN Staff: The Maya Leaders of Southern Belize have extended wishes of unity, peace, and prosperity to the Garinagu people on the occasion of  Garifuna Settlement Day.

The organization noted that, as indigenous groups, the Garinagu and Maya people are brothers and sisters of the same struggle, battling with the effects of colonization and historic injustices.

Rather than focusing on the negative thoughts, the Maya Leaders sent a message of hope, a hope that Belize can be a place where each and every person can enjoy justice and a life of dignity and wellbeing.

“On this day, when we celebrate Garifuna Settlement Day, it is the enjoyment of justice and life of dignity and wellbeing that we HOPE and desire for our Garinagu brothers and sisters! May our journey continue to be guided by the shared teaching and philosophy of our ancestors ‘au bu amuru nu’ (me for you, you for me), komonil (togetherness as a people) and muuch’ kuxtal (living together). HAPPY GARIFUNA SETTLEMENT DAY!” the Maya Leaders said.
