By BBN Staff: NBC is reporting that the COVID-19 situation in Sweden has gotten so bad, it now ranks the worst in Europe.

While the infections and deaths from the virus have begun to rise again in Europe, Sweden is reportedly the hardest hit,  with its death toll around four times higher than all of its neighboring countries combined.

As infections and deaths continue to soar, Sweden has instituted what it calls stricter measures to curb the spread of the virus. Sweden, which notably does not recommend wearing face masks, has mandated that restaurants and bars be closed by 10:30 p.m. and is looking to reduce the number of people allowed to gather in a public setting to eight. Notably, residents responded to the early closure of bars on Friday night by gathering and drinking in the streets.

Despite rising amounts of positive cases, Sweden’s Prime Minister stresses that his government has the situation under control and that the country will not have to go into lockdown.

“We don’t believe in a total lockdown. We believe that the measures that we have taken, the decision we have taken are appropriate,” said Stefan Löfven.

Sweden had reportedly refused to impose strict measures earlier in the year, with the hopes that allowing the spread of the virus in the spring would have lead to “herd immunity” by winter.
