AstraZeneca: “COVID-19 vaccine can be 90% effective”

Posted: Monday, November 23, 2020. 10:22 am CST.

By BBN Staff: In a statement today, AstraZeneca said that its COVID-19 vaccine could be 90% effective, Reuters reports.

The company said that it will produce about 200 million doses by the end of  2020. In addition, 700 million could be available worldwide by early 2021.

“This means we have a vaccine for the world,” said Andrew Pollard, director of the Oxford University vaccine group that developed the drug.

During late-stage trials in Britain and Brazil, the vaccine prevented 70% of COVID-19 cases.

The company shared that no serious safety concerns were noted.

Rivals, Pfizer and Moderna however, reported that their vaccines prevented about 95% of cases.

But, according to reports, the AstraZeneca shot works out at only a few dollars per vaccine.

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) said that the results were ‘encouraging’.
