By BBN Staff: The United States Embassy in Belize is highlighting young people in Belize.

For the month of November, the youth spotlight is on Jedene Jorgenson.

Jedene is a public ambassador of the public affairs Empowering Communities to Empower Themselves initiative (ECTET) and an entrepreneur.

The ECTET initiative works with formerly incarcerated gang members who are looking for a fresh start.

The initiative provides vocational training as well as a startup provider incubator for businesses. These businesses are then officially registered with the Belizean government.

Jedene was excited to have the opportunity to work with the ECTET initiative in order to become a positive role model within his community as well as providing other young men gainful employment, an alternative option to participating in gang activities.

As an ambassador, Jedene was in charge of reaching out to those who would benefit from the initiative and ensure that their needs could be met.

Jedene, along with other ECTET participants, was able to start the business Life Skills Multipurpose Group in 2019 holding the official opening October 16, 2020.

The business focuses on car repair and detailing, cement block construction, plumbing and other horticulture. His work reflects long-held interests of his given how he attended the 4H Agricultural School in Belmopan where he was able to learn most of his gardening and landscaping skills.

This opportunity is also significant for Jedene as it symbolizes a new beginning for himself while also presenting an opportunity for positive change to other members in his community.

Jedene aims to continue working diligently and hopes to expand his business and engage more within his community in order to give back and lower gang activity. He is very appreciative of all the people and organizations who have supported him on his journey.

More information regarding his business can be found on the Facebook page: Life Skills Multipurpose Group.
