By Aaron Humes: A now-former First Class Clerk at the Treasury Department is accused of creating an elaborate scheme to steal more than 90 thousand dollars from the Government of Belize.

After the Accountant General reported the matter to the police, June Belisle, 43, was detained on Wednesday and appeared in court on Friday before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford. She met bail of $25,000.

Belisle is accused of siphoning some $91,639.58 between November 1, 2019, and September 30, 2020, by masquerading that she was in charge of a government assistance program. The charges stipulate that she told 11 single mothers that they qualified for such a program and began depositing money into their Atlantic and Heritage bank accounts. They would then keep some of the money and turn over the rest to Belisle. She recorded their names as teachers in the Government SmartStream system.
