Mexico has the fourth-highest COVID-19 death toll in the world

Posted: Tuesday, November 24, 2020. 1:39 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: While Mexico ranks 11th globally for COVID-19 infections, the country ranks 4th in terms of the number of deaths, according to Worldometer.

As of today, November 24, 2020, Mexico recorded 101, 926 deaths associated with COVID-19, coming in behind India which has 134,383 deaths.

In a recently published article, NBC News notes that, Mexico’s death toll only accounts for test-confirmed deaths, and that the number could actually be considerably higher based on a government study which said that deaths were up by 140,000 for 2020 when compared to 2019.

Despite the number of deaths and over 1.04 million infections, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, maintains that the criticisms of his administration’s’ COVID-19 policies are from those simply wanting to make political mischief. He also holds his stance, questioning the efficacy of wearing face masks to prevent the spread of the virus, noting he has never worn one since the start of the pandemic. Mexico is also noted for having relatively low COVID-19 testing.

The Mexican President’s approach to dealing with the pandemic is reminiscent of the United States, which is the hardest-hit country in the world by the pandemic, and Sweden, which was recently reported as having the worst death toll connected to COVID-19 in all of Europe.
