COVID-19 national total approaching 6 thousand cases as northern districts remain epicenter

By Aaron Humes: Belize has 5,975 total cases of COVID-19, of which more than 2,000 remain active and 129 have died up to Wednesday, National Surveillance Officer for the Ministry of Health and Wellness, Nurse Lorna Perez announced.

The epicenter of the pandemic continues to be in the Corozal and Orange Walk District. While nationally, the average infected COVID-19 patient can infect up to seven persons, in these areas twice as many persons are vulnerable to infection.

Men are twice as likely to become infected and are a majority (90 to 39) of all deaths.

Older persons, especially those over 65 years of age, are roughly half (62) of all deaths, but Nurse Perez made note that no one is safe from infection or death.

The Banana Belt in mid-South Belize is an “upcoming area” for infections and was recently under lockdown.
