Five security force officers rescued after Coast Guard boat capsizes

By BBN Staff: A five-member team in a Belize Coast Guard vessel were rescued today after their boat capsized this morning.

An official statement from the Belize Coast Guard says that the team, which was comprised of two police officers, two members of the Coast Guard, and a Scenes of Crime technician, left the Belize City harbor around 11:00 a.m. headed to Turneff Atoll in response to a drowning report. Around 11:30 a.m. they issued a distress call saying that the boat had been taking on water.

The Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation which included support from the Belize Defense Force, Maya Island Air, and Astrum Helicopters.

The group was found around 2:30 p.m. and were taken for medical evaluations.
