By BBN Staff: Last week, representatives of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) paid a courtesy virtual visit to the new Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, Christopher Coye, to discuss ways of strengthening the Bank’s partnership and cooperation with the Government and private sector to ensure the country’s sustainable development in 2021.

IDB Manager of the Department for Central America, Haiti, Mexico, Panama and the Dominican Republic, Verónica Zavala; IDB Country Representative to Belize, Ramiro López Ghio; and Belize’s Representative on the IDB Board of Directors, Elvira Mendez, attended the meeting representing the IDB.

The Coye was accompanied by Financial Secretary, Joseph Waight and Senior Advisor, Yvette Alvarez.

To date, IDB executed projects in Belize total US$108 million.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, IDB has been working closely with Belizean authorities.

In June, IDB has reprogrammed US$6.2 million of the undisbursed balance of the country’s portfolio to assist the government with its response to the impact of the crisis resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition, a new loan of US$12 million has been approved to support the Unemployment Relief Program, which provides protection for the vulnerable population currently unemployed.

In November, IDB also approved a modification to the Education Quality Improvement Program (EQIP) II loan, to support school communities in addressing the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.
