Police to host officers’ conference this week; Commissioner defends transfers/promotions

Posted: Tuesday, December 1, 2020. 6:37 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Commissioner of Police is organizing a conference of divisional commanders this week, to be attended by new Minister of Home Affairs, Kareem Musa and CEO Kevin Arthurs.

Its purpose is for the commanders, about 50, to meet and greet the new Minister and CEO, and brief them on their respective areas of command.
One of those commanders will be Senior Superintendent of Police, Sandra Bodden, who becomes the first woman in charge of the intelligence section of the Police Department, known as Special Branch.

Most recently Officer Commanding Southern Division, the Senior Superintendent has never been an intelligence officer, but some wonder if she has not curried favour with the Commissioner for such a plum job which has reached high-profile status within the Department.

Commissioner Williams made clear that Senior Superintendent Bodden is not there to make coffee and fill in the numbers: “[Senior Superintendent Bodden] is a very good worker; [she] is very committed, she is intelligent, she is educationally sound and she has the will to learn. So, I have no difficulty believing that she, being the first woman to head Special Branch, is going to do an exceptional job at Head, Special Branch.”

And he hit the press for suggesting that women at any level of the Department are somehow inferior to their male counterparts. That she has no experience does not mean she cannot learn, and a matter of preferential treatment is really a part of making sure all deserving cops have the opportunity to advance in their careers.
Earlier this year, Commissioner Williams appointed the former head of Eastern Division, Desiree Magdaleno, as one of his two deputies in charge of administration.
