By Aaron Humes: Andy Vivian Palacio would have marked his 60th birthday today, December 2, 2020.
The artist and cultural ambassador passed away suddenly in January of 2008 after illness.
Son Kamau Andy Palacio sent us a video tribute set to his father’s song Amunegu (In Times To Come), including a little of his own singing at the end.
On behalf of his remaining family, he said they all loved and missed Andy and his efforts to keep the Garifuna language and culture alive.
Born in Barranco, Toledo, Palacio was exposed to music from a young age and after working various jobs made it a full time career, hooking up with Pen Cayetano, Egbert Mime Martinez and other pioneers.
Palacio produced several hit albums at the height of his career, and hosted a television program on Channel 5, Great Belize Television.
But it was his last album, Watina, that propelled him to superstardom internationally and also brought to the fore the likes of the late Paul Nabor, Aurelio Martinez and the Garifuna Collective.
Sleep on, Andy Palacio (1960-2008).
