By BBN Staff: This week, the community advocacy group, Promoting Empowerment Through Awareness for Les/Bi Women (PETAL), made a donation of hygiene packages to Haven House Belize, an NGO that provides free programs and services to survivors of domestic violence.

Simone Hill, Director of PETAL, explained that this year marks the fourth such donation which is done in honor of the internationally recognized 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.

Hill explained that the donations are usually sourced from members of the organization, but due to the economic strain brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the donation was made possible through the funding agency CoC Netherlands.

“It’s very important for us to continue to do this because even though there is the pandemic and it’s not going anywhere, so is gender-based violence,” Hill said. “It’s not ending, nor are the amount of cases falling. So, it became very apparent to PETAL that we need to continue offering this kind of support.”

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs every year from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.
