Police Corporal dies inside an Ambulance at KHMH

Posted: Thursday, December 3, 2020. 10:53 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Police Corporal David Jimenez died on Wednesday morning inside an ambulance while waiting to enter the hospital grounds at KHMH.

According to reports, Jimenez was experiencing COVID-19 symptoms and was swabbed on Sunday.  Since then, he was in quarantine awaiting the results of the swab. But, Jimenez began experiencing breathing problems and was taken to the KHMH about 6: 30 am on Wednesday.

However, the ambulance was not allowed inside the hospital grounds and was parked at the gate.

On Wednesday, Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams extended condolences to the officer’s family.

“ On behalf of the Ministry of Home Affairs and New Growth and the Belize Police Department, we extend our sincerest condolences to the family of David Jimenez who, as you would know by now, passed away this morning with COVID-like symptoms.  We cannot at this time say that he was COVID positive because we are still awaiting the results, but over the weekend Mr. Jimenez began displaying symptoms of COVID, and based on that he had gone to be swabbed on Sunday.  Since then he was told not to return to duty until the result of his swab has returned,” Williams said.

According to Williams, there may have been some back and forth at the hospital between BERT personnel and hospital staff where they denied to accept the officer in the hospital.

Jimenez remained in the ambulance for about 3 hours without getting any attention and he later died.

If the test returns positive, Jimenez would be the second police officer to die of COVID-19.
