Nearly 3,500 active cases of COVID-19 as deaths hit 170

Posted: Saturday, December 5, 2020. 4:57 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As of Friday, Belize has recorded a total of 7,383 cases of COVID-19, of which 3,488 are active.

147 cases were added on Friday representing results of both PCR and rapid tests.

The majority of these cases can be found in the Orange Walk, Corozal, and Belize Districts as the Ministry of Health and Wellness steps up its efforts to reduce the spread of the virus.

Deaths countrywide are now at 170, reflecting a spike first seen in late August and continuing through September, October, and especially November.

Belize is presently under a 21-day curfew and the Ministry is campaigning to encourage Belizeans to wear masks properly in public, stay socially distanced, and only travel and come out of their homes when absolutely necessary.

Several political leaders including Prime Minister John Briceno are among those stricken by the virus but it does not appear to have slowed down the behavior of ordinary Belizeans.
