By Aaron Humes: The renovated former Commercial Center in Market Square, Belize City, now serving as City Hall, cost $3.4 million and looks pretty good from the outside. But there is a major problem, according to Mayor Bernard Wagner: the place leaks when it rains, as it has been off and on for the past few weeks.
Before the general elections, then-leader of the Opposition John Briceño, and PUP’s Julius Espat and Eamon Courtenay held a press conference in their last days as the Opposition. Among other targets, they went after the Arguelles Brothers, Carlo, and Daniel, the principals of International Environments – an architecture and design firm.
The head table alleged that this company been the beneficiaries of favoritism by the Barrow Government. Espat even hinted that the Commercial Center, which was renovated by International Environments, was poorly done.
The Mayor confirmed this week that the situation hasn’t improved: “It’s just as advertised. We continue to have serious issues when it rains, there are certain leakages. I believe the company that did the rehabilitation and construction, have been in City Hall since then and has been putting together some measure of repairs…it always takes you back to where you were before when you don’t get value for money.”
