‘Pay me’, Peyrefitte tells new Government

Posted: Monday, December 7, 2020. 11:47 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: As reported by Channel 7 News, a former employee of the Government of Belize is asking the new administration for his final paycheck.

We are referring to former Attorney General and Minister of National Security Michael Peyrefitte, who officially served up to November 11, the day his United Democratic Party (UDP) was soundly defeated in general elections.

Peyrefitte was also a Senator, and both Houses of the National Assembly were dissolved in early October.

However, the Constitution provides that incumbent Prime Ministers, Ministers and Ministers of State continue to administer government services, whether elected or not, during the period between the dissolution of the National Assembly and the appointment of a Prime Minister after a general election.

The new administration thinks he should not be paid at all, but Peyrefitte argues that the new Cabinet took office by being sworn in on November 16, after new Prime Minister John Briceño, was sworn in on November 12.

By his calculations, he is owed at least 11 days’ pay, and perhaps up to 16. Ministers are paid $81,000 annually before adding allowances and roughly $6,750 per month, so Peyrefitte would collect half of that or $3,375, or at a daily rate of $225 ($6,750 divided by 30 days), $2,475 for 11 days of work.

Not much, but Peyrefitte says every penny counts and he will press to be paid off.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow had given up his remaining salary since April and Ministers chipped in a month’s salary each during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the latter were still being paid up to the dissolution of the House of Representatives.
