Police Department issues safety tips for Christmas shoppers

Posted: Monday, December 7, 2020. 10:20 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Police Department has embarked on an education campaign to help Belizeans stay as safe as possible during the Christmas Season.

Today the department released a list of safety tips designed to offer guidance to the public as they go about their business during a season which is known for an increase in robberies and burglaries but now has the additional layer of COVID-19 as a concern.

“During this season, we ask of you, to be mindful and conscious of your actions, as this is not business as usual, whilst it is customary and traditional for most of us to catch the Christmas sales and deals, you should be even more security conscious, continue to practice and adhere to rules and regulations that relate to the COVID-19 protocols,” the Department said.

Apart from keeping up to date with the latest COVID-19 protocols, the department recommends that Belizeans: keep trees and shrubs trimmed so they do not conceal doors and windows as they can provide hiding spots for criminals; place gifts where they can’t be seen from the outside; ensure that vehicles and homes are locked when out shopping; be suspicious of unexpected sales calls or deliveries and ask for identification; if planning a trip, ask a trusted friend or neighbor or neighborhood watch member to watch over your home;  engrave or make unique sign-on items to help identify them in the event they are stolen; don’t advertise expensive toys, electronics, or other gift boxes; and break down boxes before disposing of them.

“Christmas is best enjoyed at home, not in the hospital, nor at the Police station,” the Department added.
