By BBN Staff: Venezuela celebrated the 2020 parliamentary elections on Sunday after which President Nicolas Maduro commented, “Democracy triumphs, a new cycle begins.”

The Venezuelan voting process in the constitution is to renew the legislative branch every 5 years.

Telesur English reported that among the 14,400 candidates nominated, 227 lawmakers were elected.

Maduro said that the people decided that he should remain in ‘command’ of their ‘homeland’.

“Venezuela has a new Assembly. This is a great victory for democracy and the country’s Constitution. Five years ago we recognized the opposition’s triumph, but today it was our turn to win,” Maduro said.

The next step is to elect the country’s mayors and governors.

“A change of direction is coming. This must be a cycle of work to recover our economy with sovereignty, independence, and peace,” he expressed.
