By BBN Staff: Argentina made sports history this week when it debuted its first transgender professional football player, Mara Gomez, 23.
Gomez, a striker from Club Atletico Villa San Carlos, played on Monday assisting the team to a 7-1 win over Lanus in the Primera A.
Following the game, Gomez noted that football was a means of therapy and thanked Argentina Football Association and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for making it possible.
“It wasn’t magic, it wasn’t a gift, it wasn’t easy. There was a life of fighting, suffering, and sadness. There was a life on the edge of death and a broken heart. Many obstacles had to be overcome to revert to the past…This has only just begun. Today I breathe, today my soul returns to my body,” Gomez posted on social media after the win.
