By Aaron Humes: Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Public Utilities and Logistics, Marconi Leal, Jr., has tested positive for COVID-19 after the first meeting of the new Board of Directors of Belize Telemedia Limited, held Monday evening in Belize City.
According to BTL Board Chairman, Mark Lizarraga, Leal and other company directors met with him at the Belize Biltmore Plaza Hotel on the Philip Goldson Highway. The meeting was socially distanced and each participant wore masks.
Nonetheless, after the meeting Leal complained of “feeling cold” and decided to get tested. He relayed his positive diagnosis later on Monday evening.
As a result, Leal, Lizarraga and the company’s other directors are presently in self-isolation and the latter will be tested for COVID-19 later this week. Lizarraga conducted a Zoom press briefing this afternoon from his place of isolation with reporters.
As he noted, this is the new reality for many and a reminder to keep to the Ministry of Health protocols in place for work and other activities.
In related news, BTL will have to hold two Extraordinary General Meetings (EGM) ahead of its Annual General Meeting (AGM) to propose and pass resolutions on company business. The meetings are expected to be held virtually despite the company’s statutes providing that they should be held in person.
