Venezuela “has recovered its lawfulness” after elections

Posted: Thursday, December 10, 2020. 10:03 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: After a wide victory at Sunday’s polls for the Great Patriotic Pole (GPP) at the National Assembly of Venezuela, the Venezuelan Embassy in Belize has loyally hailed the “democratic determination” of the socialist republic.

The parties of the GPP, led by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), obtained 253 of 277 available seats, the Opposition parties having sat this one out. A report released by the National Electoral Council (electoral authority in Venezuela) with 98.6% of the transmission of scrutiny completed, the Great Patriotic Pole reached 4,276,926 votes or 69.4%. The opposition represented by the Democratic Alliance obtained 1,095,170 votes corresponding to 17.72%. The rest of the parties (Alliance PV, DPA, PCV) obtained 833,210 votes for 12.85%.

The turnout average in the last 5 parliamentary elections held in Venezuela was 54.4%. However the turnout this time was 30.5% or 6,251,080 of the registered voters casting their ballots.

The Embassy release points out that as with other elections this year, Venezuelans voted despite the severe difficulties brought on by the international blockade and sanctions led by the United States and the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 1,500 observers and 300 international organizations from 34 countries participated which they say validated the appropriate performance of the Venezuelan electoral system.

Labeling the Opposition “losers” trying to undermine Venezuelan institutions at the behest of Washington, the Embassy says this is only the beginning of peace and political co-existence in a country that has had neither for many years now.

The statement archly concludes, “Thus, the Legislative Power of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has recovered its lawfulness.”
