By Aaron Humes: The Government is pledging to wage a more effective fight against COVID-19, which has claimed upwards of 175 lives and infected more than 8,000 Belizeans since the end of March.

By ramping up testing for the virus and enforcing regulations, the Government hopes to get to the point where a vaccine would be readily available.

Hand in hand goes economic recovery and development, including a stimulus package and continuation of COVID-19 related relief programs.

The Government is determined to put the economy first, including incentives to rehire workers, increasing the minimum wage, creating a proper partnership with the private sector, and reforming labour laws.

In the area of agriculture, there will be investments in research including at the Belize School of Agriculture with the goal of reinvigorating the flagging industry. Fishing will be revamped under the “Blue Economy.” Forestry will focus on replanting trees and protecting the forest reserves.
