Governor-General addresses Parliament

By Aaron Humes: Governor-General Sir Colville Young is addressing, by Invitation, his sixth Parliament since being appointed in 1993.

Under the Constitution, he answers to the Queen as Belize’s Executive authority and presents the Government’s agenda and priorities as his and her own.

The new Government has promised a Belize that works for everyone, where everyone wins.

Among its priorities are to make education fully free at all levels of study, create new jobs and employment, and lead the way out of the economic wilderness that began before and which was exacerbated by COVID-19.

The speech so far featured reminders to follow health protocols and lamenting about the loss of lives, including today’s death of elected Corozal Bay representative David Vega, who was not able to take his oath this morning.
