By BBN Staff: Farmers in Belize suffered major losses to their crops after the floodings caused by Hurricanes Eta and Iota.

The Famers Association reported that over 3,000 heads of cabbage was lost due to floods.

In an interview with News 5, farmers from Valley of Peace made a plea to the Government for some sort of assistance.

Minister of Agriculture, Jose Mai says that Government plans to lobby with banks for low-income loans to assist farmers.

Mai says that he will meet with the Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to discuss how assistance can be given to vegetable and grain farmers.

“We know, for example, that Scotia Bank dropped their interest rates for some farmers from twelve percent to seven and a half percent. We need to see if other banks are doing the same and if they are not we need to ask them to do the same. We need to look at the agriculture performing loans and see how they are performing,” Mai stated.

Mai said that is part of the new Government’s 100-day plan.
