Senate goes first in the inaugural session of 13th National Assembly

By Aaron Humes: At this hour the members of the Upper House, the Senate, are being sworn in at their inaugural meeting.

Carolyn Trench-Sandiford will be sworn in as President, while a Vice-President will be chosen from among those Government Senators who are not Ministers of Government.

The Government side features Eamon Courtenay, Christopher Coye, Isabel Bennett, Bevington Cal, Collet Montejo and Erica Jang, while the Opposition is led by Michael Peyrefitte, Aldo Salazar, and Sheena Pitts.

Forming the “crossbench” or non-aligned Senators are Elena Smith, trade unions and civil society; Kevin Herrera, business; Bishop Moses Benguche, churches; and Osmany Salas, non-governmental organizations.

The House of Representatives will be sworn in after ten, with the Throne Speech from the Governor-General featured.

Its first working session is next Friday, December 18.
