Couple charged for child cruelty

By Aaron Humes: A couple from the Belize District has been accused of multiple instances of ill-treatment of their children.

A 12-year-old boy accompanied by a social worker made a report that his stepfather has subjected them to terrible treatment for nearly four years, ever since he married his mother. In total the couple have four children.

The pair, who cannot be identified publicly because the report involved minors, are jointly charged with a count of child cruelty between November 1 and 22 of this year as well as a count of harm on the 12-year-old minor.

The stepfather is charged with another count of child cruelty and two additional counts of harm against two male minors, siblings of the virtual complainant.

The mother and stepfather were arraigned on Tuesday, and they were released on bail of $4,000. We understand that they have a court order which mandates that they must stay away from the children.
