By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño announced a cut in salary for members of Cabinet including himself of 10 percent.
Speaking afterward to reporters, he confirmed the cuts would not affect allowances to Ministers and Ministers of State, which would run up to several hundred thousand dollars. But he also made clear that the salary cut was not a one-time gesture.
“A 10 percent is a 10 percent cut…we just announced it, but it’s going to be as long as is necessary, as long as we can get back on our feet,” Briceño said.
Ministers are paid $81,000 annually each, or $6,750 per month. They will also get allowances for housing and entertainment of $19,200, and they will be paid $12,000 for telephone expenses – a total package of $112,200 each. The Prime Minister receives a little more at about $95,000
Ministers of State get a salary of $54,000 annually or $4,500 per month. Their allowance for housing and entertainment will also be $19,200. They will also get $12,000 for telephone expenses – for a total package of $85,200.
In April, predecessor Dean Barrow gave up several months of his remaining salary while Ministers gave up a month of theirs to help support the COVID-19 fight. They publicly criticized members of the-then Opposition for not likewise agreeing to give up theirs.
In a future story, we will compare the figures on the salary handovers for each side.
