By BBN Staff: The Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL) Belize National chapter issued a statement extending congratulations to Chairperson, Valerie Woods, and fellow member Carolyn Trench-Sandiford on their appointments as Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Senate, respectively.
“We also recognize and congratulate all other women serving in the National Assembly. The ceremonial opening and swearing-in took place on Friday, December 11, 2020,” CIWiL said.
Speaker of the House, Valerie Woods in her inaugural address, mentioned that, “…while Belize still has much work to do in getting more women elected to Parliament, I recognize that my nomination and that of the President of the Senate, Hon. Carolyn Trench-Sandiford, signals a recognition of the critical importance of having more women in leadership”.
CIWiL says that it wishes both Madam Speaker and Madam President successful tenures in their respective roles.
“CIWiL Belize is heartened by the appointments of these distinguished women and applaud this important step toward advancing women’s representation in positions of leadership and decision making in Belize,” it added.
Additionally, the organization congratulated the newly constituted women in the National Assembly including Denise Barrow, Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Tracy Taeger-Panton and Senators Isabel Bennett, Erica Jang, and Sheena Pitts.
CIWiL Belize says that it will continue to keep the national community informed of planned activities, events, and ongoing developments within the Chapter.
