By Aaron Humes: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams has issued his latest in what has become an almost weekly warning to stop flouting COVID-19 regulations.
Those involved in large gatherings and hosting parties, the Commissioner says, are making “an easily won fight…extremely difficult. They are the vehicle being used to move the virus around.”
Belize has seen close to 10,000 total infections since the start of the pandemic in March, the majority coming after an initial period of minimal infections. Close to half of those cases are active and the country has had close to 200 deaths – more than twice as many as the murder count thus far.
The Commissioner lamented as he announced the arrests of persons yesterday for holding restricted events: “It is like the more we talk the more some people do not listen or take heed to the severity of what we are dealing with. If it is that we wish to flatten the curve and eventually win this war, we all must individually act responsibly by doing our part.”
He, therefore, asks that as we enter the holiday season, for at least the next two weeks, we “put aside our selfish need to party and think about those who are dying from this deadly virus. Think about our grandparents, our children, our doctors, our policemen, our soldiers, our politicians, and our most vulnerable population. Let us serve as their protection from this virus.”
There are some still being arrested for either not wearing face masks or coverings or wearing them improperly and not adhering to social distancing protocols to stop the movement of the virus. “No one should be getting arrested for doing what they already know they should not be doing.”
The Police, he said, encourages persons who are and continue to report to them on violations of the Quarantine Regulations not to stop as you are doing your part as we must all do.
