Coast Guard recognizes work of Ministry of Health in stopping COVID-19 among force

Posted: Wednesday, December 16, 2020. 2:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Acting Commandant of the Belize National Coast Guard (BNCG), Commander Gregory Soberanis, has commended the work of the Ministry of Health and Wellness in keeping the number of cases of COVID-19 down among the seagoing force.

Only 29 sailors have tested positive among the Coast Guard and day to day operations have largely not been disrupted.

Commander Soberanis says the acting Director of Health Services, Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, has been working closely with the Guard’s chief medic in providing guidance and recommendations of measures to be implemented which the Coast Guard has been faithfully following.

The Coast Guard is needed to keep a watchful eye for illegal activity on the sea in accordance with its mission, and so Commander Soberanis says they will continue to act with the Ministry’s help to further mitigate the spread of the deadly disease among Guard officers and staff.
