National Assembly cancels first working meeting of House of Representatives

By Aaron Humes: It is not immediately clear for what reasons, but the National Assembly has confirmed the cancellation of the first working meeting, on Friday, of the House of Representatives.

The new Government had signaled its intention to hold that meeting exactly a week after the ceremonial opening of the Assembly last week.

The Prime Minister had told reporters of plans to present two supplementary budgets to cover the remainder of the financial year.

By the Constitution and Standing Orders of the House and Senate which normally meets a few days later, the parliamentary committees must also be settled.

The new composition of the House after General elections in November is 26 seats for the People’s United Party (one, Corozal Bay, is vacant after the untimely passing of David Vega), and 5 for the United Democratic Party led by Patrick Faber.

No date has been set for a meeting which will likely take place in the New Year.
