By BBN Staff: A new case report conducted by a team at the University of Cambridge and Barts Health in the United Kingdom found that Remdesivir may be highly effective for treating COVID-19, Contagion Live reports.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, researchers have attempted to find an effective antiviral drug to treat the disease.
The drug which is being used to treat Hepatitis C was later found effective against Ebola and could now be used to treat COVID-19.
Several large clinical trial results were inconclusive and the World Health Organization (WHO) said the drug did not reduce mortality rates.
The case report used Remdesivir as an antiviral agent to determine its effects in a closely monitored patient with COVID-19.
According to the report, a 31-year-old male patient experienced symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, coughing and vomiting. He tested positive and was admitted to the hospital.
The investigators then implemented a 10-day course of Remdesivir and within 2 days, they saw improvements in the symptoms.
The team says that the drug should be given early on to be beneficial to treat the disease.
