Postponement of Friday House meeting to “COVID-proof” National Assembly Building

Posted: Wednesday, December 16, 2020. 5:10 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: This afternoon the National Assembly confirmed Friday’s postponement of the House of Representatives meeting in Belmopan.

A statement says “This has become necessary in order to ensure that Parliament meet the minimum COVID-19 health and safety protocols for all future meetings.”

A date for what will be the first working session of the House will be announced later, likely in the New Year.

The House and Senate each met once with the minimum number to ensure quorum earlier this year but the other meetings have been with the full complement of members.

At last week’s ceremonial opening, Senators met in the chamber to the consternation of some, while the full National Assembly and guests met outside after, socially distanced. Both Governor General Sir Colville Young and Prime Minister John Briceno asked to take off their masks to address the gathering.

The Prime Minister told reporters afterward that family members were disinvited to keep the numbers on Independence Hill down, while Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat assured that the Senate meeting was in accordance with protocol.
