By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño has protested that it is far too early to contemplate the upcoming by-election for the seat of Corozal Bay, vacated by the death last Friday of David “Dido” Vega.
But a relative of Vega’s already is, and she wants to keep it in the family.
Chair of the Corozal Bay People’s United Party Executive, Elvia Vega Samos, has written party Secretary-General Linsford Castillo to officially announce her candidacy after “deliberation and consultation with the Corozal Bay PUP executive.”
Having the support of the executive, she argues for an endorsement convention to avoid both intra-party division and the spread of COVID-19.
And she promises to keep alive the legacy and vision of David through his executive and ideas.
David Vega was laid to rest on Monday.
The by-election, only the fifth in Belize’s electoral history, must be held within three months of the vacancy, that is, by next March 11, 2021.
