By Aaron Humes: For the last few weeks, it has been, uncomfortably, part of the news.
Tonight, Tropical Vision Limited (Channel 7) is making news by announcing a “parting of the ways” with founder and former owner Nestor “Net” Vasquez.
The ex-chairman of Belize Telemedia Limited embroiled his television concern in an advertising contract with BTL in order to settle the debt he incurred personally. The company now says it has settled all outstanding obligations to Telemedia, including the balance on the canceled contract.
But the company, a family-owned enterprise, stays within the Vasquez family as Net’s son and News Director Jules Vasquez becomes Managing Director under a new ownership group. The younger Vasquez holds his father’s former shares and told us this evening that in addition to his new duties, he remains News Director, chief reporter, “and chief cook and bottlewasher” at the corner of Albert and Dean Streets.
The company, founded in 1981 and which claims to be Belize’s first broadcast television station, said in a statement that it “looks forward to shaping a new strategic direction under the new ownership group and leadership of Jules Vasquez. We will keep viewers updated as we forge ahead on our new path.”
