Number of COVID-19 recoveries jumps with a new definition

Posted: Thursday, December 17, 2020. 6:36 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Ministry of Health and Wellness has adopted a revised protocol by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the method of determining recovery from COVID-19.

Said the Ministry, “Before, a negative PCR test result was needed for a person to be declared “recovered”. With the new protocol, individuals are declared clinically recovered 14 days after testing positive, assuming they present no signs and symptoms.”

As a result, from 4,628 total recoveries on Wednesday, the number is 8,053 including 151 new recoveries reported.

For the first time in some time, the number of new cases (119) is outstripped by the number of recovered cases.

The new total of recoveries includes persons pending results from the Central Medical Laboratory; persons lost to follow-up who were not retested, and others whose samples were not processed.

The number of active cases goes below two thousand, to 1,526. The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic in March stands at 9,791.

With one new death, the total number of deaths is at 213. 41 persons remain actively hospitalized and four are in intensive care.
