Donors support World Health Organization’s global COVID-19 response

By BBN Staff: The Word Health Organization (WHO) explained this week that, through several member states and other donors, activities to help battle the COVID-19 pandemic are being executed around the world.

The WHO said that the funds provided enabled the organization perform a number of activities including shipping nearly 300 million items of personal protective equipment to close to 200 countries; strengthening hundreds of national and subnational laboratories with technical support and more than 250 million tests; coordinating the deployment of more than 180 teams and missions to strengthen critical response functions at national and subnational level; delivering 27 million respirators, and supporting more than 12 000 intensive care beds.

Other activities included reinforcing key health services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana, mapping the pandemic in Europe, boosting the national COVID-19 response in Cube through cooperation with the European Union, strengthening the COVID-19 response at the points of entry in Belize with support from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office , establishing an early and systematic tracking of high-risk contacts helping step up the fight against COVID-19 in India, and donating data processing and encoding equipment in the  Philippines.

“Without the support of donors and partners, WHO would not be able to reach these countries in need and help them make it through the COVID-19 pandemic,” the WHO said. “WHO thanks all governments, organizations and individuals contributing to the COVID-19 response around the world, and in particular those who have provided fully flexible contributions, to ensure a comprehensive fight against the disease.”
