United States Embassy delivers medical equipment to KHMH

Posted: Wednesday, December 23, 2020. 10:10 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On December 20, the United States Embassy in Belize delivered more than 8,000 pounds of medical equipment to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City.

The equipment, worth over $10,000 USD, was a donation from Heineman Medical Outreach, Inc. (HMO), a nonprofit based in Charlotte, N.C.

The equipment was transported to Belize on a C-17 Globemaster U.S. military aircraft through the U.S. government’s Denton Humanitarian Assistance Program.

Representing the U.S. Embassy at the December 20 donation delivery, Major Matthew Adams emphasized that the donation would help with Belize’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The United States is honored to continue its strong partnership with the Government of Belize to combat COVID-19 by providing the transport of today’s medical equipment donation for the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital,” Major Adams stated.

“The U.S. Embassy remains deeply committed to working with our Belizean and U.S. partners to help protect the Belizean people from this deadly virus. HMO has had the privilege of working side-by-side with KHMH for about 10-years, and to observe the significant achievements this institution has made to improve healthcare for the people of Belize. Thanks to our collaborative partner, Atrium Health and SOUTHCOM, this donation will be another advancement in cardiac care for the country and it will enhance the services offered by KHMH,” HMO Executive Director Theresa Johnson noted.

Denton Humanitarian Assistance Program transports humanitarian cargo donated by U.S.- based non-governmental organizations on U.S. military aircraft.

Over the last 35 years, millions of pounds of cargo have been delivered to countries around the world through the program.

During the last 10 years, HMO has provided a fully equipped cardiac catheterization laboratory, supported the training of personnel to work in the laboratory, donated operating room equipment for cardiac surgeries and supported the first open heart surgery in Belize in 2012.
