By BBN Staff: The conservation NGO, OceansAsia, says that more than 1.5 billion masks have ended up in the ocean since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, signaling a global environmental hazard.
OceansAsia recently conducted a study that began after masks started washing up on a remote island south of Hon Kong.
Dr. Teale Phelps Bondaroff, director of research for OceansAsia, said that the findings were concerning because masks in the ocean was not a major issue before the pandemic.
Bondaroff said that the high volume of masks in the ocean poses a major environmental threat because the masks are made with polypropylene (thin fibers of plastic).
