By Dee Smitt: In light of recent elections, a surge of COVID-19 cases was seen countrywide, with deaths reaching record-high levels. This general election saw the PUP with a nationwide sweep garnering upwards of 80% of votes and tagging the win as the infamous ‘Blu Tsunami’ that swept the nation. After this historical win, the cases of Coronavirus spiked tremendously, thus, tagging this spike the Blu-kut.
It is obvious that the spike in cases was a direct result of the mass gatherings that occurred as a result of the electoral process caused by all parties involved and the unwillingness of individuals to adhere to proper safety protocols.
Now that we are past elections, and well into the holiday season, we must ask, “What’s Next?” Will there be another surge in cases brought on by holiday shoppers and the traditional holiday house visits? Or will the 0-800-PARTIES prove helpful in combating small neighborhood gatherings? Is there an impending ‘Holiday-bukut’, or who will be blamed next in the court of public opinion?
It is hard to tell the real status of this situation now since results that fully reflect the spread of the virus during the holiday season is expected to truly show up until mid-January. So we ask, what’s next Belize?
