World Economic Forum: Diabetes is three times more deadly than COVID-19

By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic remains the dominant topic in health news globally, with Worldometer reporting over 1.76 million deaths worldwide, but this week the World Economic Forum (WEF) published an article to remind the world that diabetes is around three times more deadly than COVID-19.

The WEF’s report noted that diabetes killed 4.2 million people last year, with an estimated 460 million people living with the condition. The WEF also noted that, if trends continue, there will be around 700 million people with diabetes by 2045. The WEF noted that China, the United States, and India had the highest rates of diabetes in 2019, each with over 30 million cases.

“Diabetes is a serious, long-term condition that occurs when the body cannot produce any or enough insulin or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces. This results in a situation known as hyperglycemia where excessive blood sugar levels can cause a person to slip into a coma,” the WEF said.

“Global health expenditure on diabetes last year was $760 billion and is expected to reach $825 billion by 2030 and $845 billion by 2045. The WHO says most of the burden falls on middle- and low-income countries which are also seeing the greatest increase in cases.”

In Belize, diabetes is the third-leading cause of death, according to data from the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW). Data released by the ministry earlier this year showed that 160 Belizeans died from complications related to diabetes back in 2019.
