The Love-Hate relationship between Firecrackers and Belize!

Posted: Tuesday, December 29, 2020. 6:43 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In lieu of the holiday season, celebrations have been heard far and wide throughout the little country of Belize. A traditional element that comes with the holiday season are the infamous and noisy firecrackers! However, most Belizeans will find it baffling that the busting of ‘dynamite’ is actually illegal.

The possession and usage of commercial dynamite is prohibited under the Dangerous Goods Act of Belize. For the most part, the use of commercial dynamite which is locally known as ‘popshot’ or ‘quetes’ is a fixed part of most Belizeans’ childhood memories. The use of commercial dynamite by kids generally goes unpunished; however, adults are indeed punished for the sale and distribution of these goods and are frowned upon and met with the full force of the law. Recently 5 men in Santa Elena Town, Cayo, were busted with contraband beer and firecrackers. It is therefore important to note the extent of the laws so that one is not caught on the wrong side of it.

The commercial dynamite is also not a product of Belize. These goods are usually imported from neighboring countries such as Guatemala or Mexico, and the purchasing of these goods encourage border jumpers which in turn exposes our population to an increase in cases of COVID-19.

We encourage our readers to be conscious and aware of the physical and legal risks that come with buying contraband firecrackers.
