By BBN Staff: As the Government of Trinidad and Tobago continues to face mounting pressure over the Venezuelan refugee crisis, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has denied receiving any funds from the United States government to assist with the situation.
Caribbean Life News reports that the US embassy in Port of Spain, Trinidad, says that it disbursed funds amounting to some US$11 million, funds Rowley says never made it to his government.
“Just bear in mind that somebody or bodies are getting and have received $11 million for this purpose. It is certainly not the government. It explains a lot,” Rowley said.
Venezuela is said to be hosting more than 40,000 refugees, with more trying to sneak into the country on a daily basis.
Rowley blamed the worsening situation on the main opposition – the United National Congress (UNC) for whom he called an undermining of foriegn policy when they supported Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido at the Organization of American States (OAS), on the assumption that he would be the next president of Venezuela. Rowley says that his country will not participate in any voting business at the OAS until Guaido is removed and the elected Government of Venezuela sends a representative.
