Posted: Wednesday, December 30, 2020. 10:12 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the United Kingdom, BBC reports.

Amid the surge of COVID-19 cases, the government will begin giving doses on Monday.

The UK has now ordered 100 million doses – enough to vaccinate 50 million people.

Patients will be encouraged to visit vaccination centers and get the jab.

Care home residents, residents over 80 years old and health care workers are considered priority groups for the immunization.

With 2 vaccines now approved, it is expected that about 2 million patients a week could be vaccinated.

Since mass testing began, the highest single day rise in COVID-19 cases was recorded on Tuesday with 53,135 new cases.

UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said, “Great to wake up to hear the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved. Once rolled out, this will be a game-changer. Good to end a tough year with light at the end of the tunnel – but we mustn’t let up on the virus now, and we must follow the rules over the New Year.”
