Prime Minister John Briceno: Previous administration left Belize broke

Posted: Wednesday, December 30, 2020. 5:31 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In Prime Minister John Briceno’s New Year message, he spoke about the challenges brought forth in 2020.

Briceno said that Belizeans faced challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic and by the flooding.

The flooding alone caused $100,000,000 in damage to the Belizean economy, Briceno said.

“People lost their property, Farmers lost their crops and livestock and public infrastructure was seriously damaged,” Briceno stated.

Briceno added that the COVID-19 pandemic brought the Belizean economy to a near halt with over 236 Belizeans losing their lives to the virus and over 10,000 tested positive.

“ COVID-19 dramatically changed the way we work, the way we live and the world we know,” the Prime Minister said.

Briceno says that on November 11, the electorate endorsed the proposals in the PUP’s Plan Belize.

“ We received 59% of the popular vote, without doubt, my Government has a strong mandate for change. 2020 was truly a year of change, change because needed to change what was and because Belizeans want a better future. When we assumed office, we found the treasure empty. The former administration was borrowing 1 million a day to meet expenses. Imagine, they had to borrow every single month to make payroll, that is bankruptcy,” Briceno said.

In simple terms, Briceno said that due to mismanagement of the previous administration, the country is now broke.

Briceno said that in 2020, the Barrow administration borrowed over $200 million and the economy was already in recession.
