BBN Man of the Year 2020 – Dr. Marvin Manzanero

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, has been selected as Breaking Belize News’ Man of the Year 2020.

When we think about the word MVP, we know that it refers to the Most Valuable Person on a team.

Belize’s medical health professionals led by Dr. Marvin Manzanero are the real MVP’s battling the COVID-19 pandemic as it strikes our nation.

As the Director of Health Services in Belize, Manzanero is tasked with the most critical, important and challenging job ever with Belize’s response to COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Manzanero began his tertiary education at Saint John’s College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Science with a Major in Biology, Chemistry and Math.

Manzanero then went on to pursue his Bachelor Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Universidad Autonoma de Sinaloa, Culiacan, Mexico.

Manzanero conducted his internship at the General State Hospital in Sonora, Mexico.

To complete his general medicine degree, Dr. Manzanero completed social service in Medicine at the Civil Hospital in Sinaloa, Mexico.

He also specialized in Internal medicine at the General State Hospital in Sonora, Mexico.

Then in 2014, Dr. Manzanero completed his Masters in Science in Global in Global Health Policy at the University of London.

In 2018, Dr. Manzanero completed his Master’s Degree programme in Global Bioethics with Anahuac University, Mexico.

In Belize, Dr. Manzanero has served as an educator of basic medical sciences. He has also served as Director of the National TB, HIV/AIDS and other STIs Programme.

In 2013, Dr. Manzanero served in the public sector as the National Epidemiologist for the ministry of Health.

He has also served as the Director of Policy Analysis and Planning Unit and is Belize’s Director of Health Services.

In addition to his extensive professional development, some of Dr. Manzanero;s publications include Identification of major routes of HIV transmission throughout Mesoamerica, HIV and Hepatitis B and C incidence rates in US correctional populations and high risk groups: a systematic review and meta-analysis, Family planning in the Toledo District of Southern Belize:  survey of knowledge, contraceptive use, and preferences among others.

Manzanero enjoys life with his wife and 2 sons.

As the Director of Health Services and a medical expert, Manzanero remains on the forefront of Belize’s COVID-19 response.

Belizeans from near and far hail their respect for Manzanero’s arduous work, commitment and dedication to Belize and all Belizeans.
