Murder reported in Stann Creek District

By Aaron Humes: A murder has been reported in the southern village of Santa Cruz, Stann Creek District.

Police visited the home of 50-year-old Herminio Gutierrez Alvarez on New Year’s Day and found a man identified as Kelvin Lindo, 26, from Placencia, dead with a gunshot wound to the center of his chest.

Alvarez told police that around 10:30 p.m. the previous night, he was in his backyard with another Hispanic man known to him as “Christobal”, when a third man walked in.

This man stumbled into the open “suckaway” (septic tank) not far from where he was sitting but got out apparently unharmed. He proceeded to ask for “Christobal” and Alvarez told him that “Christobal” had left 15 minutes before. Alvarez headed inside his house but then heard a single gunshot and ran back outside, where he saw the man he had just spoken to struggling with another man he did not recognize, then fall to the ground.

Police processed the scene and retrieved a single magazine with 16 live rounds of ammunition.

Alvarez has been detained, while police are searching for Nicaraguan national Francisco Cristobal Mendez or Mendoza to question him.

Police say Lindo was wanted by them concerning charges of kidnapping and was apparently an associate of Mendoza.

Mendoza is well known to police and is believed to be hiding in the jungle, only coming out at night.

Police investigations continue.
