By BBN Staff: Governor-General of Belize, H.E. Sir Colville Young issued his publicly expressed condolences at the passing of former Governor-General Dame Elmira Minita Gordon, GCMG, GCVO.
“Dr. Dame Minita, Belize’s first Governor-General and the Commonwealth’s first female Governor-General, was a lady of talent and charm who served her nation with patriotic dedication and wisdom, earning everyone’s praise and gratitude,” Sir Young said.
He also offered his condolences to Gordon’s family and loved ones.
Gordon died on January 1 in the US at the age of 90. Apart from her service as the Governor-General from 1981-1993, she is also remembered fondly for her contribution to education in Belize as a teacher, and as a life-long patron of the Belize Girl Guides.
