The Belmopan Medical Center is now offering COVID-19 antigen and antibody tests!

Posted: Monday, January 4, 2021. 11:57 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belmopan Medical Center (BMC) is pleased to announce that they are now offering COVID-19 antigen and antibody tests to the general public. This was made possible after the Center introduced their new Abbott Architect I1000SR equipment which made way for less time-consuming, accurate, and reliable laboratory testing. The new machine allows the Belmopan Medical Center to test for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) amongst other things.

Currently, the BMC offers two types of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) tests. The first is the antigen test for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). This is being performed now with the use of the Abbott Pan-bio Ag test kit which is equivalent to the Binax Now, being used in the US. This antigen test aims to detect the presence of the antigen that is produced by the virus that causes COVID-19. A positive antigen test indicates that there is a current SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) infection. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) in the US, “antigen tests for SARS-CoV-2 are generally less sensitive” than the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. As a result, it is best used when the viral load is high or to diagnose someone who has a known exposure to a person with COVID-19.

The second test being done is the antibody test using the Pan-bio IgM-IgG technology. According to the US Center for Disease Control (CDC), the antibody test looks for the presence of antibodies which are proteins that the body produces in response to an infection. The CDC notes that antibodies usually start developing within 1 to 3 weeks after infection, and a positive antibody test “is presumed to mean that the person has been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, at some point in the past. It does not mean that they are currently infected.”

BMC ensures safety at all times; therefore, COVID-19 testing is conducted in the open air, outside, under a tent in front of the center. COVID-19 testing specifically is also only performed by appointments only. Their staff is also well equipped with the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) so as to not only ensure the safety of patients but of its staff as well.
